What happened that icy eve in Des Moines one year ago gives a tiny glimpse of what was to come: a victory for a candidate who pushed newcomers to the polls by stirring passions not seen in decades and executing one of the most brilliantly organized and disciplined campaigns in modern history.

Karl Johnson, a caucus veteran, summed up that evening with a prescient observation: "This is a zoo," remarked the Iowan, "but it's very good if you want change."
